Winter Gear For Wildlife Photography
2020-09-29The following is a list of gear I use for photographing wildlife in cold environments, sorted from the top of the body on down:
Head
This thing is awesome and a real game changer. Sometimes I just wear a beanie when it's not so cold, but the Balaclava keeps my face much warmer.
Torso (from inner to outer)
Long-sleeve Shirt (typically a cheap Henley from Amazon Essentials)
Amazon Essentials Sherpa Lined Hoodie
Patagonia Torrentshell Rain Jacket
A note on how I use these: If it’s slightly chilly I will just wear the down jacket or the hoodie. When it gets quite cold, I will wear the down jacket over the hoodie. When it is below freezing, I will add the rain jacket on top, to further insulate, break the wind, and keep any rain or snow off.
The Patagonia jackets can also be packed down small, which is why I picked these. As a frequent traveler, this helps immensely.
Hands
Thin Glove Liners
Must have touch screen capability to use my phone
Photography Gloves
I am testing a new pair this winter, so I can't recommend them yet, but will be sure to add a link when I am sure about them.
Legs (inner to outer)
Any Sweatpants or Joggers
Air Force camouflage ABU pants
Unfortunately these aren't very good in the cold, but I haven't found a good replacement yet
Feet
Any Socks, preferably Merino Wool
LaCrosse Men's Alphaburly Pro Hunting Boots
I love these because not only are they warm, they also allow me to step through swampy ground, shallow water, or deep snow without my feet getting the least bit wet.
