- Taiko by Eiji Yoshikawa
- Very good book by the author of Musashi.
- I loved Musashi so much I named my cat after the main character.
- This book was not quite as good, but still a great book and worth a read if you are into philosophy, war strategy, and historical fiction.
- It is about a Samurai warrior in ancient Japan who starts as just an ugly farm boy and works his way up to become the ruler of the country.
- Also, this book has 1,400 pages, so it takes a bit of time.
- Tiny, Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed
- An amazing book by the author of Wild.
- This is a collection of columns the author wrote for many years, where people would write in asking for life advice.
- Her advice relates to her own disturbing life and will have you in tears from the very beginning.
- The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris
- This is the best biography I have read since Benjamin Franklin by Walter Issacson.
- It is a long but brilliant picture of the young president on his way to the presidency, and ends just has he inherits the position.
- This is the first in a series of three biographies of “Teddy” Roosevelt and I intend to read the other two this year, as well.
- The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
- This is one I put off for far too long. Fitzgerald’s prose is excellent and the story is exactly what I expected of a great writer from the time of Hemingway and the other expats in Paris.
- One of the reasons I read this when I did is because I had been waiting to watch the movie, and the movie was one of the best adaptations I have ever seen.
- I’m sure I will be rereading this book in the future in order to refine my writing.
- Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card
- Another one that I read mostly because I had the unwatched movie with me for far too long.
- The book was great. I couldn’t put it down.
- I read it in two days, which is a huge feat for me, being a slow reader.
- I highly recommend the book and I plan to read the sequels as well, once I shorten my “To Read” list a bit.
- However, don’t waste your time with the movie.
- An awful rendition of a great work of art.
- It appears that the screenwriter either didn’t read the book or didn’t like it and decided to make his own version.
- On Writing by Stephen King
- This is a book I had been meaning to read for ages and finally decided to pick it up.
- Reading this book is actually one of the reasons I began reading Ender’s Game, just because it made me want to analyze good fiction and learn ways to improve my own writing.
- A great work that is half memoir-half writing guide.
- This is actually the first King book I have read, but after it I plan to pick up some of his earlier works.
- Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys writing, but maybe not for those who do not.
